the great city:The city of Jerusalem (Jer 22:8), which crucified the Lord Jesus and took the lives of numerous early Christians (Acts 5:28-30; 7:58-60; 12:2; 26:10). Some interpret this verse figuratively as a reference to the unbelieving world and its hostility toward the Church. This is the first of several references to the “great city” in Revelation (17:18; 18:10, 16, 18, 19, 21).

Sodom and Egypt:Places infamous in the Bible for their moral depravity and oppressive slavery (Gen 18:20; Ex 1:8-14).

• Occasionally the Prophets compared the iniquity of Jerusalem to that of Sodom and Egypt (Is 3:9; Jer 23:14; Ezek 23:27).
