RSV ~ Matthew 27 v15 - 23
Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the crowd any one prisoner whom they wanted.
And they had then a notorious prisoner, called Barabâbas.
So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, âWhom do you want me to release for you, Barabâbas or Jesus who is called Christ?â
For he knew that it was out of envy that they had delivered him up.
Besides, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, âHave nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much over him today in a dream.â
Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the people to ask for Barabâbas and destroy Jesus.
The governor again said to them, âWhich of the two do you want me to release for you?â And they said, âBarabâbas.â
Pilate said to them, âThen what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?â They all said, âLet him be crucified.â
And he said, âWhy, what evil has he done?â But they shouted all the more, âLet him be crucified.â
