given thanks:A translation of the Greek verb eucharisteō, which is the basis for the English word “Eucharist”. Jesus’ multiplication of bread after giving thanks foreshadows the Last Supper and the institution of the Blessed Sacrament (1 Cor 11:24; CCC 1328, 1335). See note on Mk 6:35-44.
