they compelled:Roman garrisons in NT Palestine claimed the right to recruit Jews for temporary service (see Mt 5:41). Mark designates Simon of Cyrene as the individual forced to assist Jesus. His son Rufus may have been a well-known member of the early Roman Church (Rom 16:13).
